Anecdote*Feb 1964A correspondent writes:-
One of the doyen of the India tea industry, Hugh Pinckney, died on Thursday at the age of 87 at his home at Hungerford, where he lived for over 50 years.

Educated at Wellington and Trinity College, Cambridge, he entered the family tea business and lived for a time on the Bonaccord estate in Travancore in 1898. Later becoming chairman of the tea companies in both north and south India, he was head of the Poonmoodi Tea and Rubber Co Ltd for 50 years. A founder member of the South Indian Accociation he was also its chairman for three periods of office, the first in 1920-21. In addition he was a director of the National Bank of India for 20 years.

Being unable to serve in the forces in the First World War because of his eyesight he was in the War Trade Intelligence Department, for which he was awarded the C.B.E.

A man of keen intelligence and wit, he was devoted to country life, being a fine shot and an ornithologist. He bore the death of his two sons in the last war, Philip in the S.A.S. and Colin in the R.A.F. - a D.F.C in Burma - with great fortitude, and he continued to attend to his business interests until a year or so of his death. He is survived by his wife, Winifred, and his three daughters.
