Note* | James Smith was difficult to trace, as you can imagine. With the help of someone in another branch of the family I believe the following details to be correct. We started with only two concrete pieces of data which I think are both flawed. Firstly, in the 1939 Register it states his birthday as the 15th of January 1889. I think the birthday is correct but the year is wrong. It should be 1885. If this were being dictated it is easily possible to mis-hear nine instead of five. When he married Rosina Hatch in 1906 he gave his age as 21 which would mean he was born in 1885. Secondly, in the marriage registry he gives his father's name as John who was a Clay Pipe Maker. I believe his father was George who was a Clay Pipe Maker. So what makes me think that those things are wrong and we have located the correct family for James? 1) His father was a Clay Pipe Maker and so was George (or sometimes recorded as a Tobacco Pipe Maker, the same thing) 2) Assuming his parents were George and Ann Jane, and in conjunction with where the census states he was born and in what year meant that I found his birth certificate which gave the date of birth as 15th January 1885 which exactly matches our expectation 3) His first daughter was called Rose after his wife Rosina who was sometimes also called Rose. This was quite a common practice. 4) He had a sister called Lena and his second daughter was also called Lena 5) He had a sister called Mary and his third daughter was also called Mary 6) He had a brother called John Richard and he had a son called James John 7) He gave his father's name as John and he had a brother, Uncle and Grandfather all called John 8) Although not proof, his father George died when he was only 3 so he certainly would nit have known him very well and after his father's death may have seen his Uncle or Grandfather as a father figure 9) If he were born in 1889 then he would have only been 17 when he married Rosina in 1906 when she was 21. Not impossible but doesn't sound likely and does not match the age given. I think these are overwhelming coincidences for us not to have found the right family. I sometimes see coincidences and rule them out but for me there are just too many. Unless someone can prove me wrong. | |
